Grimnelly was built during the first world war and was situated on one of the highest points in this very flat alluvial island. From the platform, it would have been possible to look over the sea wall (which was low at that time) and observe every ship that passed up the Thames.
I believe that the television arrived after the electricity was installed.
But, although the aerial remained, the TV set did not. I seem to remember that the pictures "moved about too much".
This cooker was used for heating and cooking before a very small electric oven was installed. This was a table-top model about the size of a large microwave oven.
I tell people that this was an AGA but my cousins do not seem to appreciate the promotion...
Eventually mains water was connected, but before that, all the water for both washing and cooking came from a very large rainwater tank at the back of the house. I remember being told off once for not closing the tap at the bottom quickly.
